Vincent Van Gogh is considered today as the greatest Dutch painter and loved by many people. Unfortunately, his paintings suffered degradation problems. This paper introduces the pigments used in Van Gogh's paintings and reveals the fading's secret based on chemical principles, the research of pigment chemistry also can help to choose the best strategy for the proper conservation of art masterpieces.
The pursuit of perfect blue pigments since the 20th century has led to new breakthroughs in the field of contemporary art and the development of new pigments. After two years of research on Cyanotype, we created a series of cyanotype works using different materials and fine-tuned processes. Cyanotype experiment was chosen into the chemistry laboratory course. It is a "Cyanotype adventure" that blends chemistry and art by holding an art exhibition to introduce cyanotype to the public.
Based upon the method of making recycled paper and the knowledge of natural pigments, this popular science experiment proposed an approach for making recycled paper dyed with vegetable pigment. This popular science experiment exhibited scientific, intriguing, brief and high operability. Moreover, we also creatively designed some interesting handmade works including pulp paintings, coasters, and origami, using dyeing paper and dyeing pulp. This experiment would provide a useful practice of chemical sustainable development, which helps the public better understand the chemical principle of recycled paper making and the extraction method of natural pigments.
