Abstract: This study investigates the differences between Chinese and English chemical nomenclature systems and develops effective teaching strategies for non-chemistry-major undergraduates. Through comparative analysis of inorganic and organic compound naming conventions, significant discrepancies arising from linguistic structures and habitual usage were identified; these often create comprehension barriers when students encounter English-language scientific literature. Based on the author’s teaching experience, an innovative instructional approach was designed, incorporating analogy-based teaching, etymological analysis, and structure-recognition methods to enhance students’ understanding and application of English chemical terminology. Teaching practice demonstrates that this strategy significantly improves students’ comprehension and utilization of English chemical nomenclature, effectively overcoming terminology obstacles and enhancing their efficiency in reading English-language literature. The study concludes with recommendations for pedagogical improvements, providing a valuable reference for chemistry education in non-chemistry disciplines.
