Abstract: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) have garnered significant attention in recent years for their notable effects in lowering blood glucose and treating cardiovascular diseases, with semaglutide being a leading example. This article, written in a popular science format, provides a brief introduction to the hypoglycemic mechanism, functional structure, and side effects of semaglutide, as well as the critical role of the penetration enhancer salcaprozate sodium (SNAC) in its oral formulation. Through this discussion, we aim to highlight the fascinating aspects of drug design while promoting the importance of rational medication use.
