Abstract: Endocyclic metal carbynes represent a distinctive class of organometallic compounds characterized by metal-carbon triple bonds within cyclic frameworks. The synergistic effects of ring strain and metal-carbon bonding confer unique physicochemical properties to these systems. This review comprehensively examines recent advancements in endocyclic metal carbyne chemistry, encompassing synthetic methodologies and reaction mechanisms. Special attention is given to the aromaticity and ring-strain effects in five-membered cyclic metal carbynes, elucidating their impact on structural stability and reactivity patterns. The reaction behaviors governed by the amphiphilic nature of the carbyne carbon are systematically discussed. Incorporating these cutting-edge research findings into undergraduate organometallic chemistry curricula serves to enrich course content, enhance student engagement, and foster innovative thinking and research enthusiasm.
