Abstract: Dental restoration is an essential part of oral healthcare, where metallic restorative materials have been extensively employed owing to their superior mechanical properties. Whereas the human oral cavity is a complex and dynamic ecosystem teeming with microorganisms. The electrochemical potential differences between dissimilar metallic materials, combined with the presence of saliva as electrolytes, may promote the formation of micro-galvanic cells, consequently inducing electrochemical corrosion. Herein, we present an engaging examination of galvanic cell formation between gold dental restorations and amalgam fillings within the oral cavity. By artfully integrating fundamental electrochemical principles with dental science in relatable contexts, we analyze the electrochemical reaction mechanisms of metallic restorations and their potential implications for oral health. Our discussion highlights the advantages of non-metallic alternatives such as composite resins for mitigating electrochemical interactions. Offering both scientific rigor and accessibility, this interdisciplinary exploration bridges oral medicine and electrochemistry, enhancing readers' comprehension of the chemical phenomena underlying oral health maintenance.
