Abstract: This experimental design demonstrates the preparation of self-adhesive elastomers with tunable tensile and adhesive properties through free radical bulk copolymerization of a photoresponsive hydrazone-based monomer with acrylic comonomers of varying flexibility. The mechanical properties were modulated by adjusting the rigid/flexible monomer ratio, while the adhesive performance could be enhanced on-demand via visible light-induced hydrazone isomerization. Addressing the limitations of conventional bulk polymerization (difficult condition control and single functionality), this experiment yields elastomers whose performance can be both qualitatively observed and quantitatively measured. The design effectively engages students while deepening their understanding of key concepts such as “structure-property relationships in polymers” and “polymer viscoelasticity”. Furthermore, the solvent-free bulk polymerization process employing visible light offers advantages of operational simplicity, environmental friendliness, and cost-effectiveness, making it particularly suitable for undergraduate laboratory instruction.
