The molecular stage: the luminescent revolution of cyanine dyes

Abstract: Cyanine dyes represent a class of functional organic molecules gifted to us by the chemical world. Their unique structure, featuring nitrogen-containing heterocycles and tunable polymethine chains, confers remarkable optical properties, making them indispensable as sensitizers for solar energy conversion, core photosensitizers for photodynamic therapy, and bright fluorescent probes for bioimaging. This article presents a comprehensive yet engaging overview of the cyanine family's structure, properties, and diverse applications, aiming to provide readers with a holistic understanding of this fascinating molecular family.
