Abstract: Photosynthesis is one of the most crucial chemical reactions on Earth, yet the exact mechanism of oxygen formation during this process remains unclear. Recent studies by Greife et al. and Bhowmick et al. revealed specific details about S3 → S4 → S0 in the Kok cycle, providing new evidences and perspectives for our understanding of the mechanism in photosynthesis.

Key words: Photosynthesis, Photosynthetic oxygen evolution, Oxygen-evolving complex (OEC), Kok cycle, S4
